It's interesting that you should mention humility. You see, I was just
thinking that it is very arrogant to take the words of God and twist them to
suit individual biases, even when it is done by the so-called avatar gurus
that seem to be infesting Kali Yuga and preaching their monistic philosophy.
But even more arrogant than twisting Lord Krsna's words to forge your own
philosophy is the idea of someone claiming to be, or allowing others to
think, that he is God. Certainly these kinds of claims are sure to attract
followers, but there is another quality that is even better for this
purpose.
When Srila Prabhupada came to the United States, he didn't have to manifest
any magic tricks in order to bring people into the Krsna-consciousness
movement. He was always very humble and never allowed his devotees to think
that he was God. He didn't have to, because he had *sincerity*.
How unfortunate it is that some unscrupulous "gurus" who lack this quality
must rely on the display of some yogic powers in order to fool people into
thinking that they are God. Perhaps these people and their followers could
take a first step on the road to humility by admitting that they are NOT
God. Then, maybe they can read Bhagavad-Gita with and chant the Lord's
names with an open mind. Until then, I think it best that these would-be
Gods refrain from lecturing to the rest of us on humility.
