Summary: Hinduism Textbook
This new book logically explains the Hindu Canadians' religious beliefs,
customs and traditions in down-to-earth simple language. The author
cleverly demystifies Hinduism, and debunks many popular misconceptions
(i.e. Hinduism is a polytheistic religion with a multitude of gods and
goddesses) that have been perpetuated in the western world for hundreds
of years. The subject matter of this work is not limited to the Hindu
religion; it also deals with controversial social issues, i.e. status of
women, arranged marriages vs. free marriages, the case system and
untouchables, the dowry custom, suttee, bride burning and abortion, etc.
While discussing these issues, the author offers historical as well as
contemporary perspective in a Canadian context.
THE HINDUS OF CANADA is also a window on the Hindu community in Canada.
The author paints a portrait of early Hindu-Canadian pioneers who first
landed in British Columbia about a century ago. He illustrates how they
struggled against the most vicious form of racial prejudice one can
imagine, to live in Canada with dignity, and acquire equal political
rights. Besides narrating a historical overview on pioneers, this book
also offers a profile of contemporary Hindu Canadians who emigrated to
Canada more recently.
This book will make an excellent primer for anyone who is interested in
the background of Hindu Canadians. It also caters to the needs of
students and teachers of social studies and world religions, cultural
interpreters, trainers in multiculturism, and community workers.
THE HINDUS OF CANADA, contains 204 pages, illustrations and photographs
and is hard-covered with a beautiful multi-colour jacket. As this is not
a commercial venture, it is moderately priced at $10.00 (taxes, packaging
& postage not included).
