It is reported that Guru Nanak said, 'There is no Muslim. There is no
Hindu.'
I understand that to mean that Guru Nanak asked his followers to rise
above the pettiness of labelling people according to their religious
affiliation. He was telling his followers that it did not matter what
religion a person practised.
I cannot imagine Guru Nanak, a person of such lofty ideals, declaring
that he is not a Hindu or telling his followers that they are not
Hindu.
In my country (Malaysia) our Sikh brothers used to celebrate Deepavali
together with us for a long time. That changed after the Bhindranwale
incident at the Golden Temple and the assasination of Indira Ghandi.
Too often, religious tolerance is pushed aside by political zeal and
personal ego. As was pointed out in an earlier article, in this Kali
Yuga, Truth stands on one leg!
Peace and blessings.
