I'm hoping that someone drops by this newsgroup from time to time!

Can anyone recommend good self-study guides to Sanskrit?

I was once told that Sanskrit is not spoken, it is sung.  Is that true?

Where can one buy complete texts for the Vedas (either original Sanskrit 
or translations)?

Finally, I notice that the TM newsgroup (I am not a TMer) has been 
speaking about the Shankaracharya tradition.  Any comments on that 
tradition and on other traditions? (If this is a stupid question, please 
excuse my ignorance).
