DHAKA, March 31 (Reuter) - The Bangladesh government and tribal rebels
have agreed to extend a truce in the Chittagong Hill Tracts for three weeks,
officials said on Friday.
They said the truce would now last until April 20 while the government
continued talks wuth Shanti Bahini, a tribal guerrilla group demanding
autonomy for the 14,200 sq-km (5,500 sq-mile) area bordering India and Burma.
Officials say more than 3,500 rebels, soldiers and civilians have been
killed since the Shantis began an insurgency in 1973 to stop the mass influx
of Bengali-speaking settlers into what they called a tribal homeland.
More than 50,000 tribespeople fled to Tripura state in India trying to
escape the insurgency. Six thousand have returned home since February last
year, officials say.
