NAVAGRAHA IDOLS ARRIVE FROM INDIA
INSTALLATION CEREMONIES TO BE HELD AT SHIVA-VISHNU TEMPLE
BY BALA VISWANATH
The Navagraha or 9 celestial bodies are comprised of Surya(Sun), Chandra
(Moon), Angaraka or Mangal(Mars), Budha(Mercury), Guru(Jupiter), Shukra
(Venus), Shani (Saturn), Rahu and Ketu (Shadows). The 9 bodies appear to
move in the celestial sphere with reference to the stellar constellations
known as Nakshatra (Stars). There are 27 Nakshatras which are
repeated in a Hindu calendar every month. The movement of these bodies
with respect to the nakshatras are said to control a person's destiny
including his thoughts and deeds, status and prosperity. The importance
of Navagraha worship has been stressed by ancient saints and maharishis
and references are available in the sacred writings, one of them being
the 'Maha Prayaschitha Grantha'. It states that by the worship of
Navagrahas, the planets which are in auspicious situations offer increased
fruits of benefits for one's actions while the planets which occupy less
desirous situations tend to remove the evil effects of a person's karma.
Bay area Hindus will soon have one of their longstanding desire to worship
and propitiate the Navagrahas come true when the SHIVA-VISHNU temple,
Livermore, consecrates and installs the Navagraha idols which arrived
from India recently. The religious ceremonies are scheduled from Wednesday,
May 10th to Sunday, May 14th. The idols are on display at the temple
and devotees may have noticed the raised pedestal that has been built at the
north-east corner inside the temple in preparation for the installation.
The idols are made in granite stone under the direction of Sri Muthiah
Sthapathy, the temple architect. The ceremonies will be conducted by the
5 temple priests Sri Srinivasacharyulu, Sri Avadhanulu, Sri Nataraja
Ganapadikal, Sri Umashankar Dixit and Sri Ram Kishore Shastri.
The celebrations will commence on Wednesday, May 10th at 6 PM with Anugna
(taking permission from the presiding deities), Ganapathi Homa (offerings
to Lord Ganesha to remove all obstacles), Punyahavachana (purifying the
puja materials and the participants through mantras), Mritsangrahanam
(worship of Bhoomadevi and bringing back some earth to Homakunda where
fire offerings to the navagraha idols will take place) and Ankurarpana
(the earthen pot is seeded with nine grains and allowed to sprout). The
second day's ceremonies will commence at 8 AM on Thursday, May 11th
with Akalmasha Homa and Agni Prathishtapana ( installation of the sacred
fire in the Homakunda) and the start of a series of Navagraha Homas both
in the mornings (10 AM to 12 Noon) and evenings (6 to 8 PM)on Thursday,
May 11 and Friday, May 12. Saturday's (May 13th) ceremonies begin at 10 AM
with the Adhivasas (the pandits use Panchakavya - 5 sacred substances with
milk and water to purify the idols) and the Navagraha Homa between 11AM
and 1 PM and continuing in the evening between 3 PM and 8 PM. The
highlight of the entire ceremonies will be the installation of the
Navagrahas beginning at 9 AM followed by Abhishekam, Poornahuti and
Deeparadhana.
All devotees who attend and witness these rare installation ceremonies
obtain the blessings of the Navagrahas and can rightly feel fortunate.
Devotees who wish to sponsor the various parts of these ceremonies are
requested to call the temple manager at (510)449-6255 for sponsorship
details.
