Article for Alt.Hindu: Gita Chapter 2: Verses 56 to 58, comments
BG: 56, 57 & 58 Comments
These verses describe the characteristics of "steady mind." A steady mind
is calm and has stable and discriminating wisdom to "witness and
experience events". The events are the results of past actions and we have
no control over them.
Should we rejoice when "good" happens and regret when "bad" happens?
Dr. Radakrishnan points out that we don't praise the flowers when they bloom
and condemn when they fade! We accept that we are just witnesses and
we will be foolish to judge the events and the actors!
Bhagavan reminds us that "steady and discriminating wisdom" is to do the
"right" thing at the "right" time. The example "just as tortoise tucks up,
due to fear, its limbs on all sides" is a powerful reminder of the
importance of "right action." We all remember the moral from "tortoise
and the rabbit story" that "steady and slow win the race." Tortoise is an
excellent example for a "Karma Yogi." Bhagawan reminds us that "steady and
discriminating mind through "Jnana Yoga" is achievable by all of us if we
determine and continue to follow "Karma Yogi."
Our religion is full of "symbolisms" with treasures hidden deep inside
"self" and it is up to us to think and get it! (Gurudev reminds us all the
time about significance of "thinking"). When tortoise tucks up, it is
free from all external disturbances! There are three types of people: (1)
those who take all precautions before the event like the tortoise. (2)
those who undertake actions at the time of the event like the elephant
that fights to protect it from a tiger. (3) those who do not act and just
rejoice or regret over the event. Bhagawan asks us to be of type (1)!

"Truth is a pathless land, and you cannot approach it by any path
whatsoever, by any religion, by any sect. Truth, being limitless,
unconditioned, unapproachable by any path whatsoever, cannot be
organized; nor should any organisation be formed to lead or to
coerce people along any particular path." J. Krishnamoorthy
