Day Without Violence
***************************************************************
Greetings,
Please note the attached document about "A Day Without Violence" scheduled
for next April 4, 1996. Please pass this notice around and ask teåachers,
public servants, artists, etc., if they want to organize an event to
commemorate "A Day Without Violence". Please send me info about any
event that is being organized so that I can list the communities,
organizations and individuals who are planning activites on this date.
Some of the events already under way include the "Poetry in the Schools
Project" in Taos, NM. which will ask their students to write poems about
Peace and Nonviolence and then do a poetry reading in April.
Dances are being planned, one in Texas, one in Maryland with the theme:
"Think Globally, Dance Locally" - A Day w/o Violence - 4/4/96
One High School may plan a "Pep Rally for Peace" with speeches by students, etc.
Individuals or familes may choose to be vegetarian, or serve a vegitarian
meal on that day.
Please pass this document along to schools, churches, peace groups local
governments and community organizations. The intent of this program is
that each event is to be an original, independent activity, organized and
sponsored by individuals in that particular community.

Issue a Call for an International
_ DAY WITHOUT VIOLENCE -
4 April 1996
The Conference on Nonviolence and the Peace Studies Association call upon
all interested groups or organizations such as public schools, community
associations, civic organizations, public forums, churches, businesses, as
well as students, faculty and staff at colleges and universities and in
communities around the world to celebrate a
* * * * * "DAY WITHOUT VIOLENCE, APRIL 4, 1996 * * * * *
The purpose of the event is:
* to focus on alternatives to violence such as conflict resolution, the
promotion of nonviolent methods of social change, and the creation of
social structures that cultivate peace rather than war;
* to promote the study of the processes of peace as a central aspect of
the educational and research agendas of the Academy, our government and
our communities and schools;
* to cultivate communication among interested individuals in
communities around the world.
This "Day Without Violence" project is designed to encourage events
appropriate to each specific group, such as:
* a community-wide or campus-wide teach-in focusing on the above issues;
* discussions in classrooms or other forums across the community
conducted by individuals who would like to participate;
* the dissemination of information about peace studies as a field of inquiry;
* making the community a violence-free, hate-free zone for the day (and
in the future!);
* serving and eating a meatless meal that does no violence to other animals;
* celebrating alternatives to violence in creative ways (concerts, art
exhibits, street theatre, essay contests, pep rallies for peace, poetry
readings, inter-generational events, etc. -- whatever is locally appropriate)
* obtaining endorsements for the event from individuals, business
establishments, the media, student and faculty organizations, the
administration of your school, the mayor of your town, the police
department, the state government, civic organizations, churches, etc.
* have a dance, call it, "Think Globally, Dance Locally."
If you are willing to organize a "Day Without Violence" in your
organization, community or school, please let us know. April 4, 1996 was
chosen because it is the anniversary of the assassination of Rev. Dr.
Martin Luther King, Jr. The violence that occurred on that ignoble day
extinguished a powerful voice proclaiming nonviolence as the only valid
method to achieve social justice. We want to honor Dr. King's goals by
designating April 4th as the "Day Without Violence." We hope that you
will organize an event in your community to promote nonviolence. Please
notify me so that we can include your group in press releases and reports
about the event.
