still I have to read or hear these scriptures, build mental images in my mind, and
understand with my intelligence (well ... ). This process is affected by my memories
karma, and temperament - the Guru being the only human one who can claim otherwise ?

Yes,
my preference, which I think the beautifully open hinduism also
supports, is crystallised in these lines by Ramprasad:
"He it is that I approach as Mother.
But must I give away the secret here in the marketplace ?
>From these hints I have given, O mind, guess what that Being is."
The mind/ego can only guess, and it will not be with the Self on
the final platform.
