Re: a Post to alt.hindu Why this Ramakrishna- Vivekananda bashing?

In article <3gp6ro$gr2@ucunix.san.uc.edu>, ptbast@wpi.edu says...

Well, there is the commandment "thou shalt not kill." Lord Jesus never said
"thou shalt not kill humans," he said "thou shalt not kill." Therefore, we
have to interpret that to mean that one should live his or her life while
causing as little killing as possible. Since one can get by without killing
animals, therefore vegetarianism must be seen as one of the conclusions of
this commandment.

Also, in Genesis (1:29-30) it is said:

"And God said, 'Behold, I have given you every herb bearing seed which is on
the face of the earth, and every tree in which is the fruit of a tree
yielding seed; to you it shall be for meat.'
"And to every beast of the earth and every fowl of the air, and to every
thing that creepeth upon the earth wherein there is a living soul, I have
given every green herb for meat."

So we must conclude that the Lord intended for us to subsist on vegetarian
foods, not meat.

There are other verses which *seem* to condone the eating of meat. That is,
it is said that Lord Jesus himself ate meat. However, scholars point out
that the word "meat" in many of these verses is a mistranslation of the
Greek words for food and nourishment in every case, while the word 'fish'
was used symbolicly. It is also asserted that at the first Council of Nicea
(A.D. 325) the original Christian documents were altered to please Emperor
Constantine, who was a meat eater. Consequently, the meaning of many verses
which clearly pointed to vegetarianism were changed. Subsequently, the early
Christian fathers who were vegetarian had to practice in secret or risk
being arrested and executed for 'heresy.'

Of course, if you are not satisfied with these arguments, then we can always
just forget scripture and use common sense. Would Lord Jesus, who taught
compassion, reverence for life, and kindness condone the wholesale torture
and slaughter of millions of innocent creatures per year just to satisfy the
taste buds? I think that should be enough to convince any sincere believer
in Christ...
