:can fully understand that point of view, having been raised in it and 
:previously espousing it, i can only be disappointed with it now.

Just a short comment.
Hare Krishna or ISKON are frequently (and wrongly) confused with Hinduism.
You are very correct in saying that, one of the biggest strength of Hinduism is its acceptance of other-world views.

ISKON in essence is a "special interest group" for Krishna Conciesness.
Just because Hinduism has tolerance for special interest groups, does not mean that ISKON is the essence of Hinduism. It is entirely acceptable to be considered a devout Hindu (for whatever it means) without accepting that Bhagwan Krishna and only Bhagwan  Krishna is the lord !!

Strive for spiritual enlightment! Do not get tangled in shapes or institutions.
