Laxmi is an expansion of Srimati Radharani, the pleasure potency of the
Supreme Lord Krsna. Just as Radharani is eternally devoted to Krsna in
Goloka Vrndavana, so too Lakshmi is always serving Lord Vishnu in the
Vaikunthalokas. She is said to live on His chest. Also, She serves the Lord
by massaging His feet as He lies on His bed. Because Lakshmi is the goddess
of fortune, She can give material fortune to the conditioned souls who are
devoted to Vishnu. This also explains why the inhabitants of Vrindavana were
so wealthy 5,000 years ago when Lord Krsna was dwelling among them. The
inhabitants of Vrindavana were also very devoted to the Supreme Lord, and
consequently they enjoyed great wealth and opulence. Of course, compared to
Lord Krsna's form and beauty, this opulence did not even compare.
