I have read a book by Dr.VedVyas on Ramayana in which he makes
an interesting theory on the location of lanka mentioned in the
Ramayana. He says that in the Ramayana, Valmiki described lanka
to be on the same longitude as that of Kanyakumari. (This
Kanyakumari, he says, is on the same longitude of the the later
hasthinapura...I did not verify). It was also mentioned in the
Ramayana that from this southeren tip of India, Lanka
is 100 yojanas. Each yojana can be translated into
3.75 KMs approximately (correct me). This comes to a distance of
approximately 375 KMs. So, the Ramayana's Lanka might have
existed somewhere near 375KMS from Kanyakumari and it might
have got submerged in the ocean later or moved and merged in someother
continents (Australia...my wild guess).
Regarding the link between India and America in the olden ages,
I personally feel there was a link long time back. It might
not be through land but a sea route in the east direction. I
have read some books trying to prove this point (written by
historians). The gist is that India and Mexico had cultural and
other ties long back. I am not a historian therefore I do not
know exactly how far it is true. I read a theory which says
Vamana threw Bali to America (Patala).
I would appreciate if more light is throuwn on the topic.
