MASSIVE SHIVA STATUE CONSECRATED

Bangalore, Feb 27 (PTI): A towering 65-foot statue of
Lord Shiva in a meditating posture, said to be the largest
such idol of Shiva in the world, was consecrated here today,
synchronising with Mahashivaratri.
The statue, made of reinforced concrete using a mix of
modern structural engineering and the ancient "Shilpa
Shashtra", was unveiled by the Sringeri Mutt Shankaracharya
Sri Bharati Theertha Swamiji.
Mounted over an area of 6,000 sq feet on the Airport
Road, the statue of Shiva with a pair of tranquil eyes, is set
against the backdrop of mountains -- Kailash -- with
waterfalls on either side.
The other highlights are a pond beneath, reflecting the
idol and "Om Nama Shivaya caves", a neon-lit pathway through
which visitors can walk to the sound of Shiva mantra.
In a symbolic representation of the Ganga, water flows
from the matted hair of Lord Shiva.
Mr.K.Kashinath, is the sculptor, and the piece has been
made in conformity with the "Shila Shastra". The statue has
been funded by two leading businessmen of the city, Mr.Ravi
Melwani and Mr.Vashi Melwani.
