re:sin

My guru, Swami Chinmayananda used to say that sin (papam) was an act we
engaged in, gross or subtle, (physical action, or thought and feeling)
that agitated the mind. This agitation further entangles us in the
jagadjala, the web of the world (interesting play on words given we are
on the INterent with its world wide web!). merit (punya) is any act
gross or subtle that serves to quieten the mind, and therefore move us
towards Self Realization. Interestingly enough, the same act can be
punya at one point in our spiritual unfoldment, and at a later time
papam. As we become more subtle, The pysche requires greater and
greater quietude in meditation. Even chanting a mantra becomes "papam"
if the mind can revel in the silence!
