Pakistan Islamic Court Orders Amputation of Hands, Feet
ISLAMABAD, June 8 (DPA) An Islamic court in Pakistan's north-western
territory has ordered the amputation of limbs of three men convicted of
robbery, it was reported today.
Judge Shahjehan Khan of Dir District ruled that the men's right hands be
amputated from th wrist and left feet from the ankle.
The punishments of amputation and stoning to death are provided in
Islamic laws imposed in the 1980s by late dictator Zia-ul-Haq, and they
have been carried out by the state.
Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto's government established the Qazi courts in
the Malakand territory six months ago after a bloody uprising by tribal
Islamists.
Last month, the govt. challenged in higher court an order by a Qazi court
to pay blood money to the family of a man found murdered on a road
because the murderers could not be traced and the road belonged to the govt.
