Hare Krishna Susarla's reply was adequate from one point of view.
I have pondered this question of sexuality in general for some 40 years,
and the question of homosexuality for about 30. HKS's answer covers the
groundfor all major religions, including the Roman Catholic Christiand Baha'i.
But,
it doesn't answer the question in total. Why do we have a body (bag of sh..
and pi..) in the first place? Moksha cannot be attained without it! Therefore
I respect very deeply my very own personal bag of sh.. and pi..
Ultimately, study of the Scriptures of the Christian, baha'i and hindu
groups of humanity lead me to the personal opinion that scripture exists
in order to transcend itself. Any holding too tightly to scripture becomes
an attachment to maya and prevents moksha. Turning to "authority" is also a
blind alley, seem to me, because -- Who is the Authority? (Self).
Well, there is a reason for abstaining from sexual acts at times. My guru
was told to begin abstaining from all sexual acts when he was in sadhana
period. But when I deiscussed with him
my felt need to abstain in order to help my meditation, he warned me not to
exceed three
weeks, as it would cause damage to my mind! (He was married when his guru
told him that.) So what's the answer. Since you are interested in
scriptural references, I would advise to read "Devatma Shakti" a book
by Swami Vishnu Tirtha, particularly the chapter on panchagni vidya
(science of five fires) and brahmacharya (celibacy or the greatest teacher).
He includes and discusses Vedic references in detail. It is readable
but it took me over five months to study it, and the grace of Guru to be
able to practice it.
The answers to sexual behavior, I find to hold to be true for myself, lie
in practice of discrimination, always seeking to find out Who am I? and
testing my intention to see if it is based in love. Jai Ma.
