Approach The Divine Mother First

Subject: Approach the Divine Mother First

The question is often asked why should not one approach the Supreme Lord
directly, instead of going to His devotee first. The role of the
devotee in obtaining the grace of the Lord is answered very effectively
by way of the following conversation between two Vaisnava saints in the
Ramanuja Sampradaya.

Nanjiyar questions Bhattarya, "For salvation, is it not enough to go
directly to the Supreme Lord, why should mother be the mediator?"

To which Bhattarya replies, "In nature we know that when a child is guilty
the mother protects the child knowing the father is angry. The mother knows
the opportune moment when to speak to the father and make the father forgive
the child. So is the case with the Supreme God, as Father, He is the
Judge, and as Mother, He is the Forgiver. The is the quality of mercy
overflowing in God."

One aspect of relationship between the Supreme Lord Narayana or Krishna and his
pleasure potency -Sri- is beautifully brought out in the conversation.
