BJP SWEEPS GUJARAT CIVIC ELECTIONS
Times of India, June 15, 1995
Ahmedabad: The ruling BJP in Gujarat is all set to create a record by
capturing all the six municipal coporations of Ahmedabad, Baroda, Surat,
Rajkot, Jamnagar, Bhavnagar and Una municipality where elections held on
Monday.
Od the 63 results announced in Surat today, the BJP captured 62 seats and
one seat has gone to an independent. The Congress has not won a single seat.
The BJP has also consolidated its hold over the Rajkot municipal corp. by

The counting of votes is almost over except for Ahmedabad where it is
expected to abe over in the next two days.
The BJP would for the first time hold sway over all the six municipal corp.
in the state. The party's victory has been attributed to the soft Hindutva
card played by the BJP campaigners after successfully deploying in in the
assembly elections.
In Ahmedabad, of the 51 results declared so far, the Congress has won only
three seats and the BJP 42.
The Congress is also trailing behind in Baroda, Jamnagar and Bhavnagar where
it has won seven, two and four seats respectively. The BJP has consolidated
its position, winning 42 seats in Baroda, 24 in Jamnagar and 18 in Bhavnagar.
Of the 262 results declared in these corp., the BJP has won 226 seats, the
Congress 14 and the remaining have gone to the independents.
