Ann Arbor hsc visit to Bala Vihar
Namaste Everyone,
Just thought you might want to know about a really successful event we
had yesterday. About 25 people from the University of Michigan hsc
chapter visited the Chinmaya Mission Ann Arbor Bala Vihar and held
different workshops for the kids.
The Bala Vihar is a Hindu sunday school-type thing where about 130 kids
come each sunday and learn about different aspects of Hinduism. Hsc's
visit was really a fun and informative event for both the kids and the
hsc members.
The children were divided into 3 groups, where the youngest heard the
story of Prahalada and did some drawing of various scenes from the story,
the middle group played Hindu Jeopardy, and the oldest group discussed
issues on developing an identity as a Hindu in America.
The whole event was a big success. ALL the kids had a GREAT time!!
Not only was it a good change from the regular classes, but also was very
educational. I think the best part of it was that Each of the activities
was appropriate for each age group, allowing everyone to get the most out
of the event. Of course, I shouldn't fail to mention that the hsc
members themselves (from what I heard) all had a lot of fun with the
whole thing as well, and most learnt a lot about hinduism from preparing
to lead the various activities.
This is also a good way to get the Indian non-university community
involved in hsc activities and for them to become aware of hsc and its
goal and needs.
If anyone is interested in doing something like this, I can let you
know about what bala vihars are in your area...e-mail me at
vrkumar@umich.edu. Thanks!
