Largest Hindu Temple in US Opens

AUSTIN, Tex., Oct 8 (Reuter) - About 2,000 worshippers celebrated the
opening on Sunday in Texas Hill Country of what officials say is the biggest
Hindu temple in northern America.

The temple, encompassing about 35,000 square feet (3,200 square meters)
and topped by a 90-foot-(30-meter)high meter a golden dome, was built near
Austin on what was once a cattle ranch.

``This is a very big deal for us. It is a place for us to celebrate
religious events,'' said Ajay Goyal, an Indian native now living in Austin.

The temple -- called Barsana Dham -- is headquarters for the
International Society of Divine Love which was founded by Swami Prakshanand
Saraswati, also known as Shree Swamiji.

A spokeswoman for the group said the temple was built in Central Texas
because its tree-dotted hills resembled some areas of India.

The celebration included a procession on a nearby country road to
accompany a float carrying the Hindu deity Shree Raseshwari Radar Rain onto
the temple grounds.

The procession was showered with about 30,000 marigold blossoms thrown
from a helicopter overhead.

The temple is the first outside of India dedicated to the female deity.
The procession was led by several notable Hindu leaders from the United
States, Trinidad and India, the spokeswoman said.
