Dear Friends:
Do any of you know what a 'pshycho-motor tilt' is ? It is in the current
issue of 'India Today'. A physics professor of IIT Delhi, named Satish Abbi,
invented this wonderful hypothesis to explain away the recent milk drinking
phenomenon.
In plain english, pshycho-motor tilt is, the person with the milk spoon
was reflexively POURING the milk over the image of Lord Ganesha,
expecting the image to drink the milk up. According to the hypothesis,
the 'physics' is similar to draining out of oil through the wick of a oil
lamp. Only in the case of the image, the 'porosity' of the stone is the
conduit.
This is merely bad science. My hunch is that their 'control' experiment
failed, that is, when they held the spoon horizontal for the entire
length of the experiment, nothing happend, therefore the induction of
"pshycho" in the title of the hypothesis. For the rest, as the saying goes,
one does not need to be a rocket scientist to figure out that if a person
pours milk by raising the handle relative to the ladle, the milk will flow
down in a trickle.
I hope that Professor Abbi has a better explanation.
Regards,
Dhruba.
