Pooja & Presentation:"The Hindu Experience through Indian Art"

The Hindu Students Council hosted a cultural event at 7:00 p.m. on
Friday, October 13 at Hitchcock Hall. The function, attended by non-Indians
and Indians alike, included an observance of "Navaratri," a religious
festiveal celebrated annually in India, and a presentation of Indian Art.
The Navaratri "pooja," or worship, focused on Sri Ganesh, the
remover of obstacles, and Devi Saraswati, the Goddess of Learning in the
Hindu pantheon. Respects were offered to the Deiteis and sanctified food was
distributed to all present.
The religious ceremony was followed by "The Hindu Experience through
Indian Art." Two doctoral students in Art History, Kimberly A. Masteller and
Chaya Chandrasekhar, each presented a slide show on their respective fields
of expertise. Ms. Masteller is focusing her line of study on female
iconography, and Ms. Chandrasekhar is specializing in Medieval Hindu
Scriptures as well as architecture in the Deccan region. The presentations
were very enjoyable and informative for the whole audience.
The Navaratri celebration and art presentation were both held with
free admission, and the Hindu Students Council plans to hold similar events
in the future. For more information, please contact Raj Singh at 297-8860,
