A Siva stotra by SankarAcArya
-----------------------------
The term Siva means "auspicious." The God Siva is
all-auspiciousness. The mantra namah SivAya, used
to offer salutations to Siva, is an effective
prayer to propitiate Siva. This mantra appears in
many places in Vedic and Puranic literature.
For example, the famous SrI Rudram hymn from the
Yajur Veda, commonly employed to perform the worship
of the Siva linga, says:
namah SivAya ca ...
The dAridrya dahana stotra of VasiShTha says:
dAridryaduhkha-dahanAya namah SivAya
Salutations to Siva who burns up the grief caused
by poverty! Here poverty does not necessarily mean
material poverty; it also means spiritual poverty.
This pancAkShara (five syllabled) mantra namah SivAya
is sometimes called the mUla mantra or basic mantra
of Siva. Each of the five syllables, na, ma, Si, vA, and
ya, is held to be so sacred that it represents Siva even
by itself.
The following is the SivapancAkShara stotra composed by
Adi SankarAcArya. One may worship the Siva linga by
reciting this stotra and offering bilva leaves.
A transliteration key for pronunciation of Sanskrit words
can be found at the end of the article.
