I am not a Hindu, but I am very interested in your religion and people.
I have heard that many Hindu's are pure vegetarians. Most Americans
believe Hindu's eat all meats except beef. Can some one clarify this
for me?
I have seen three replies to this query and I am afraid none of them
really answers the question posed. Meat eating is a taboo only to
certain castes (social classifications) of hindus, namely brahmins (the
caste devoted to propritiation of gods and reading of scriptures) and
vysyas (the business caste). On the other hand, kshtriyas (kings) and
sudras (the artisans and farmers etc) can and do eat meat. In some
parts of india (bengal for example) fish is permeitted to be eaten by
vegetarians. I do not know why, but it is interesting to note that many
americans and japanese also consider fish to be non-meat!! However,
beef is not to be eaten by ANY hindu. I always thought that cow is
sacred as it came along with godess Laksmhi, Ambrosia and a lot other
things when angels and demons churned the ocean of milk.
