This is a very good question.
Hindu weddings consist of a few different ceremonies.
One of the key ceremonies is called the "Sapta Padi".
In this, the bride and the groom tie knots and walk seven rounds
around fire vowing to lead life together for dharma, artha, kama,
mokhsa. This is done in front of fire and in blessings of
different other gods.
The other key ceremony is called lajahoma. The couple-to-be
perform this homa together.
In general , one takes the blessings of ancestors as well as
the elder ones and wishes of everyone.
The 2 families also perform their traditional rites and have
a common understanding of each others traditions and customs.
The weddings tend to be elaborate and are usually one day long
and sometimes could be even longer.
It is a joyous occasion for everybody.
There is a variation of ceremonies in different places.
The priest (guruji) who leads the prayers and vows declares them
to be married but the garlands are exchanged as well.
