We have accumulated bad/good karma when we were rocks, plants, trees
etc. For example, a tree giving shade to other living beings, earns
good karma, although it does not do it out of its own will. Similarly a
tree earns bad karma when someone stumbles across it's roots and falls
and breaks a bone. From those ancient origins onwards we have
accumulated good and bad karma.

Why create more chains (karma) to bind you? Our purpose is to get
released from this cycle of birth and death and merge in god. You
question suggests, lets always be in the mud of maya and never come
out.

God did not limit everyone to follow one path only. That is why He had
created so many religions all over the world. Idol-worship is one way of
concentrating on the divine, which many (including me) find helpful on
our journey towards god.
