Upanishadic scholarship
Dear Friends:
I believe that we are fostering an old attitude of uncalled for
self-defeat when we matter-of-factly say that the Upanishadic scholar
is born once every 200-300 years. I can not possibly ever tell you enough,
how wrong you are to say that, and how much it is possible to read and
understand the Upanishads.
I know that there will be verses that will stop us, but we can look for
help, and we will get it too. I am prepared to help you with the little
understanding I have acquired by the grace of God, although I am like the
little lamp in this Bangla vachan:
ke loibe mor karya, kahe sandhya rabi.
shuniyA jagat rahe niruttar chhabi.
mAtir pradip chhilo, se kahilo swAmi,
AmAr jetuku sAdhya kariba tA Ami.
(Who will take over after me, asks the setting sun. hearing that, the
world remains silent like a piece of picture. The little lamp was there,
it said, Lord, I will do what I can.)
