Dear Friends:

I realized I did not refer to a very famous verse on Scriptural 
authority from the Upanishads.  

nAyamAtma pravachanena labhyo na medhayA na vahuna shrutena.  Katha 
1.2.23; Mundaka 3.2.3

This Atman (ayam AtmA) is neither availed by (na labhyah) reading the 
Vedas (pravachanena), nor by merit (na medhayA), nor by many sessions of 
hearing Scriptural texts (na vahunA shrutena).
