Re: The meaning of Jagannatha
Dear Giriji and Vijayji:
Thank you for the information on Krishna Upanishad. I have never read
it, and even if I did, I would not be suited to make the judgement on
whether or not it is a Vedic Upanishad. I will just say that Sri
Sankaracharya listed only the Aitareya Upanishad (written by Rishi
Mahidas, known by his mother's name ItarA), and one can easily tell that
it belongs to the RigVeda. I believe that two ciriteria are used to
make such determination; (1) if the Upanishad physically belongs to the
Samhita or Brahmana and (2) if the Upanishad deals with the verses of
the Veda.
I believe that Sri SnakarAchArya knew all 108 Upanishads, and since he
did not list this one, I am curious about this Upanishad.
Vijayji, I know that there are 3 suktas in the RigVeda that have verses
about Lord Vishnu. But I do not have any reason yet to think that Sri
Krishna was an incarnation of Lord Vishnu. The Verse you referred here
is about Lord Vishnu, not Sri Krishna. Perhaps, some Vaishnava tantra
texts say so, but I am not familiar with them. The Krishna in
ChhAndogya Upanishad, has been described as son of Devaki, disciple of
Ghor Angirasa.
