PRESIDENT PRESENTED GANDHI'S GITA

   NEW DELHI - Indian President Dr. Shankar Dayal Sharma
was presented the personal copy of the religious book of
the BHAGAVAD GITA of Mahatma Gandhi by the Indian High
Commissioner to the United Kingdom, L. K. Singhvi, at a
simple function at the Rashtrapati Bhavan August 24.

   Receiving the book, the President said, "I am happy
that we have been able to get back in India, the GITA
used and studied by Bapu (Gandhi) in England."

   He said Mahatma Gandhi had used the GITA as a
practical work and not just a philosophical one and his
inspiration for the freedom struggle came from this
book.

   Dr. Sharma said there is need to preserve the success
attained by Mahatma Gandhi and securing independence and
that "you have to work hard and not sleep or be
overjoyed."

   The book purchased for 19,000 pounds by a non-resident
Indian, Madubhai Madhavani, and the letter the Mahatma
wrote to a friend on his way to Karachi, which was
bought by one Rathibhai Chanderia, was given to the
president as a National heirloom.
