Certainly. During its early days ISKCON like most of the other sects and
movements of that era mainly attracted disaffected Western youth. (Think
of hippy as a generic term. I'm young enough to have only seen the 60's on
TV) When they grew out of this phase most of the sects folded. ISKCON
could easily have shared the same fate except around the end of that era
Indian immigration began. For some of those immigrants ISKCON represented
not some revolutionary break with the past but a conservative connection to
the past. I'm sure there are still Westerners joining the Hare Krishna's
to this day but it's the immigrants who keep the organization afloat.
