Press Release: Hindu Students Council cleans highway

Press Release
Hindu Students Council cleans highway in Michigan

On September 29, 1996, Hindu Students Council (HSC) participated in the
State of Michigan's Adopt-A-Highway program. This project is part of
HSC's commitment to SEVA (service), as the Hindu way of life recognizes
seva as a duty that should be performed by every citizen.

Siva Hota, a member of HSC's North American Coordination Council and a
5yr veteran of HSC activities including SEVA (service) projects at the
University of Michigan (Ann Arbor, MI) campus, explained, "As a group
this is an excellent way to work as a team and put our efforts into
giving back to the society."

Three years ago, the HSC-Michigan chapter adopted a stretch of US-23 in
Ann Arbor. HSC is responsible for cleaning this part of the highway
three times per year. The State of Michigan has put a sign on each side
of the highway recognizing HSC for its contribution to the
Adopt-A-Highway program.

Ankur Agarwal, in his 3rd year with HSC, said, "I think that our
Adopt-A-Highway experience is very positive because it reminds us of how
much pollution we create."

Adopt-a-highway is one of many projects the Michigan chapter does as
part of HSC's SEVA (service) projects. This year, the SEVA projects at
the Univ. of Michigan are being coordinated by Aarti Raheja and Sridhar
Palanisamy. Sridhar remarked, "Adopt-A-Highway is truly an eventful
experience. It is great to see the enthusiasm from students who
represent HSC." Other ongoing HSC SEVA projects include serving food to
the homeless, volunteering at a children's fair for cancer patients,
Hand-On-Atlanta, blood and bone marrow drives, Support-A-Child, and
disaster relief.
