BOMBAY, India (Reuter) - Bombay police, heeding calls from
Hindu nationalists, have filed obscenity charges against leading
Indian artist Maqbool Fida Husain for painting Hindu goddesses
nude, a senior police official said Tuesday
Hindu nationalist politicians and activists have in recent
days focused their rage on Husain's paintings of the goddesses
Saraswati and Draupadi -- although the artist painted the
offending pictures two to four years ago.
``We have filed one case against Mr. M.F. Husain on charges
of obscenity in art and depicting a Hindu goddess in a form in
which she is not normally seen,'' deputy commissioner of police
Deepak Jog told Reuters.
Husain, a Muslim, will have to answer the charges when he
returns from London, where he is currently staying, Jog said.

Leading lawyer Nani Palkhivala was quoted in the Times of
India daily as saying, ``I am against this kind of censorship.
The temples of Khajuraho are replete with erotic sculptures. So
what's wrong with Husain's paintings?''
The BJP youth leader defended his view by saying the
sculptures were concealed inside caves and temples.
