Hindu is the Persian word for the Sindhu river.  Hindustan was their name
for the land beyond the Sindhu.  The Greeks called the Sindhu Indus and the
land beyond it India.

It has nothing to do with any Purana.  The Sanskrit name for India is
Bharat.
