Not with a view to justify, but to correct your not so
innocent ponderings, the paintings were destroyed because
of their offensive nature. The eminence or the mediocrity
of the artist has nothing to do with it.

All of his paintings are not offensive. One was. Is it now selling
like hotcakes. Are paintings being mass produced these days.
