Possibly. Brahmanhood is purely a matter of birth not morality. A Brahman
becomes a dvija and entitled to practice Dharma through the ritual of the
Yagnopavit Sanskara.

This is a story, nothing more or less. And we do have direct quotes.
There are specific statements in Shankaracharyas writings where he makes
clear that he is for Varnashrama Dharma. For instance a little while back
in this group a poster posted an excerpt from the Brahma Sutra Bhashya
where Shankaracharya makes it quite clear Shudras are not entitled to
practice the Vedic sacrifices. However much some may wish it,
Shankaracharya is not some 19th century progressive. He is an acharya in
the Vedic tradition and has the same outlook as all the other acharyas in
that tradition past, and present.
