There is a nice sloka which I heard from His Divine Grace A.C.
Bhaktivedanta Svami Prabhupada. I don't know the original source.
It goes like this:
janmana jayate sudrah
samskarad bhaved dvijah
veda-pathad bhaved viprah
brahma janatiti brahmanah
"By birth, one is a sudra. By training of samskara, one
will become twice-born. By study of the Vedas, one becomes
a learned man, and one who knows brahman is a brahmana."
