GLOBAL PRAYER DIGEST
7/30/94 PRAY FOR A STRONG CHURCH AMONG THE YOUNG HINDUS IN THE USA
BY THE YEAR 2000.
"Are you going to the conference this year?" Ganesh asked Supu as
they
walked the tree-lined campus to class. "I doubt it, I have too much
studying
to do," replied Supu. Mihir smiled and said, "Come on, bud! There will
be
lots of available girls there that your mom and dad would like. And it
might be
fun. Did you hear what the new slogan of the Hindu Students' Council is?
`It's
hip to be Hindu!' It's only $25 for a whole day. Why not take off from
the
books?"
These medical students, typical of second generation Americans from
India,
are from wealthy and professional families whose hectic suburban lifestyle
leaves little time to teach the children how to be Hindu in a Christian
society.
Because of the pressures of growing up with the influences of two
extremely
different cultures, young Hindus in the U.S. often appear to be rudderless.
The
Vishwa Hindu Parished (VHP), active in North America for 20 years, seeks to
provide direction and stresses religious community for young Hindus. Based
in
India, but with 20,000 generous supporters in North America, the VHP holds
annual conferences by Hindu youth groups like the Hindu Students' Council.
The
meetings reinforce Hindu thought and meaning for the searching young
Indians.
Dear Lord, make us aware of how we can complete the Great Commission
among
those unreached Hindus, Muslims and Buddhists in our own land. Fill the
hearts
of Hindu students with a hunger to know Jesus, the Savior of all peoples.
