I have noticed that Hare Krsna devotees sometimes identify with
Hindus and sometimes distance themselves from Hindus, and this isn't
appreciable in most people's eyes. I believe that this is because
most people assume that what we call "Hindu" or "Hinduism" is
consistent and defined. But it isn't. That being the case, it should
surprise or apall no one that Hare Krsna devotees seem to take an
ambivalent position. What choice do they have? "Hinduism" must
first be clearly and consistently defined, then we can determine
who is "Hindu" and who isn't. For those who lose sleep about this
question, I would suggest looking at that problem before eagerly
providing groundless answers.
