i am not answering the quesiton but just adding a comment:
Not all hindus are cremated:most are ;but some are burried.
The sanyasis, yogis, and some others ( i do not know who
qualify for what: may be infant children, and some small pox victims
etc) are not cremated but burried.
i guess manu dictates this!
