The word "Mitr(a)" signifies "friend" and the Vedic/Hindu divinity
associated with this attribute, and with the honoring of agreements
and treaties, is God Mitr(a).  In Iran, the equivalent name is
"Mithr(a)", and at one time this form of the name re-entered Bharat
as "Mihir(a)".
