I remember reading about this book "Rama Retold" by Aubrey
Menon. It was not meant as a scholarly study/translation,
but more as a savage satire (on what? I am not sure).
I think most people interpreted this as
more than "light hearted blasphemy". I also think
the govt. banned the book in India.
However, this man also wrote a book, "The Indian Mystics", which
was on the whole favorable (though, here and there he mentions
things which might be considered unacceptable by some.)
