I understand, though, that these works were passed orally from
generation to generation, perhaps for centuries or even millennia,
before they were first put down in writing. I suppose that would make
this phase of their existence impossible to trace, except that some
works contain clues such as observations of constellations, or
descriptions of date-able events such s the great flood or the ice
age.
