Numerically, the number 108 is the product of 9 and 12 [9 grahas
(planets) in the twelve houses ). Staying on the subject of
astralogical significance, the number 108 is also the 27 nakshatra
(asterisms) multiplied by three (reference to three worlds, tri-murti,
trinity etc.) Those these numerical relations do not explain why the
number 108 is critical, I would first refer to the Puranas for some
guidance. The Gayatri Mantra is ideally recited 108 times during a
day, but the number 1008 also has validity in this regard. Go figure.
