In Tamilnadu, India this word 'Ammachi" is used in a colloquial form
to mention god.Mainly, such an usage is predominant when parents tell
something about "god" to their children. A strange connotation was
given by the Sage Sri Kanchi Kamakoti Chandrasekarendra Saraswathi in
one of his discourses. The sage says the word "Ammachi" is an altered
form of "Ummachi". (Actually, I have heard lot of people using
"Ummachi" also.) The origin of "Ummachi" is from Uma-Mahesvaran. The
lord is always addressed as a unified form of "Shakthi & Siva". This
discourse from Paramacharyal can be found in "Deivaththin Kural" by
Vanathi Padipapagam.
