Who can worship the creator directly? Only a few.
Most people find it very difficult to suspend their analytical thinking to
be able to "worship" the formless. The mind has a very strong habit of
labeling everything. Even the term "Creator" gives the formless a form for
the mind to grasp. Simply the concept of worship implies that there is
something other than myself to which I pay homage.
So, for at least 99.9% of the world, worshipping God in the form of an
idol, a person, or a mental concept is the best that can be done. It gives
the analytical mind a point of focus through which, eventually/hopefully,
the mind can transcend the realm of name and form.
