Power of the Mantra
The recent postings on the Power of the Mantra were very interesting
and I thought I would share something which my spiritual Preceptor once
said about the Divine Name. Please bear in mind, that this is not an
intellectual statement. When She repeated the Mantra, "Om Shanti," the
whole atmosphere was filled with Power and Peace. Sometimes people, who
were just walking by in the street, would come and knock on our
Sanctuary door and ask us what this place is and where is the Peace
coming from. So that is the only way to understand the Power of the
Mantra, to realize it oneself or, at least, to experience the Power
emanating from someone who has realized it.

...Om Shanti, Shanti, Shanti.... You know why does the Mantra work?
And do you know why does the word "God" work? Because behind the Mantra
and behind the Word are the sages and the saints and the realized
Souls. That's why regardless whether you know Sanscrit or Hebrew, or
any other ancient language, you will benefit, if you will put your
whole heart into a certain holy affirmation. Because it is alive, the
atmosphere around it is pure, lofty, Divine, at times even Absolute. If
we would not have these realized words, then any fool would come to you
and say, "Use my Mantra." And that's what happens very often. And there
is nothing behind it, - you have to use that which is sanctified. And
that's why when we say "Om Shanti" and put our heart into it, we get
the benefit out of it. When we say "Om Peace" we get less benefit out
of it, funny as it is, because that word "Shanti" has in it the ancient
emanations of really the Souls who were full of Shanti. When you say
"Om" you say everything. It is believed that this was the first
vibration of the Invisible Supreme, the first manifested sound. So
don't take it casually. [Intensely] Ommm Shanti, Shanti, Shanti....
