"Bindi" is the most common name for the red circle commonly worn by
married women.
Widowed women usually avoid decorating themselves in any way, and forego
wearing a bindi.
Young women sometimes wear decorative bindis for special occasions before
they are married.
And a small group of men, usually _brahmins_ of certain families, wear
"thaliks", large, bindi-like red circles on their foreheads to signify
their piety and devotion.
