Red dot on forehead
I forwarded your question to a very knowledgeable friend to ensure that
you get a complete information. Here is his response:
Afedel@aol.com 's post of 5/31 on SRH asks about red mark on the head.
The mark when worn by women is called 'Bindi' or 'Kumkum' and when worn
by men is called 'Tilak'. Almost all Hindu holy ceremonies require both
men and women to wear such a mark.
There are several important significances of it.
1. It is worship of head or intellect (Buddhi).
2. According to Yoga, there are 7 centers of spiritual energy located
in the human body akin to neural plexuses which when energized
sequentially lead to spiritual perfection. These centers are known
as chakras. The sixth of the seven chakras is known as 'Ajnya'
(meaning Command) chakra and is located between the two eye brows.
This is also a called "Guru's' chakra after the the spiritual
master.
3. In meditation one concentrates his/her eye sight at this spot
between the eye brows. Please notice almost all Buddha images show
him with eyes focused there. Great saints and seers write that they
see an extremely bright 'blue' light at the very spot. When you see
such light even with your eyes closed OR open, that is when you
reach a state of perfection and experience state of unfathomable
bliss which all the prophets, saints write about.
4. Lastly, such a mark makes a great beauty enhancer.
Thus it has a deep intellectual, mystical, yogic and practical meaning.
For the 5 year old the the first and the 4th explanations should be
adequate. Namaste (meaning I bow to the divinity in you) !
